€500,000 of Road Project for South Tipperary

Posted on September 17, 2013 by Alan Kelly

I have announced over €500,000 worth of road projects for South Tipperary. The new funding came available following Tipperary Town councillors voting  not to let the Town's link road go ahead. When Tipperary town council voted not to let the link road proceed, I immediately ensured that funding would remain spent in Tipperary. Now we will have significant footpath works in Tipperary town, new resurfacing through Lattin and major improving works between Ballingarry and Urlingford. The €500,000 is only available to spend in 2013. A number of projects were identified that could the funding to its best use. Working in the Department, it was important that some portion of the funding would go towards repairs in Tipperary if the Link road was not to go ahead. The funding will now be used for a major road strengthening initiative on the road between Ballingarry and Urlingford, the R690. €238,000 works commence this week between the town lands of Crossogues and Foilacamin. The village of Lattin will also see over €110,000 spent resurfacing of the main road through the village. Tipperary town will also see additional footpaths connecting residential areas on the Dundrum Road and Galbally Road with the town by footpath. Finally a grant of €35,000 will be allocated to the Old Bridge in Carrick-on-Suir which was identified earlier in the year of in need some repairs. Having ensured that the funding would stay in Tipperary, I am glad that investment will be of real benefit to many people right across South Tipperary. These projects will ensure the level of funding South Tipp receive is maximised and will benefit the a significant number of road users from drivers to pedestrians. All of these works will improve the local environment for many Tipperary people and follows additional funding for road repairs from the Government's stimulus package announced earlier in the year.

7 New Classes for Children with Speical Needs in Tipperary

Posted on September 09, 2013 by Alan Kelly

I welcomed the announcement that Tipperary has received seven new classes for children with special needs. This is part of an announcement of 118 new classes by the NCSE across the country for children with special needs. This means that 242 new special needs classes have been created during the lifetime of this government, which is a 50% increase in the availability of special needs classes. I was well aware of the work that was being put into special needs teaching across the county as I have been working with many of the schools that deliver these classes. I'm delighted that Tipperary has got its fair share of new classes which now means we have a total of 21 special needs classes across the county. I would like to thank the schools that are working with me and this government to deliver these vital services. This announcement proves the point that despite the economic woe of this country, we as a government are committed to supporting school children with special needs. A new booklet is also being launched by the NCSE to help parents choose a school for children with special needs. The following are the seven new schools: Primary St Joseph's Primary School Murgasty Road, Tipperary Town, ASD Early Intervention St. Mary's Junior School Nenagh, ASD Early Intervention Loughmore NS Loughmore, Templemore, ASD S N Iosef Naofa Cor An Bhile, Roscrea, ASD Post Primary CBS High School Clonmel, ASD Borrisokane Community College ASD Coláiste Dun Iascaigh, Cahir, Co Tipperary, ASD

Death of Former Labour Party Councillor Sally Gardiner

Posted on September 09, 2013 by Alan Kelly

I am saddened to hear of the death of Labour party colleague, councillor, lifelong member of the party and friend Sally Gardiner. Sally was the first town’s first woman to be elected to the Nenagh Town Council, and the first woman to be elected as Cathaoirleach. Her election to the position was so unique that the council had to adopt the term of Cathaoirleach as there had never been a female chairperson up to that. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis

Pictured today with Elizabeth Dermody Leonard in her home in Portroe today. Elizabeth made a unique piece of Irish history today as she became the very first person ever to be awarded the citizenship of Ireland in her own home. I was glad to help out in making this little piece of history happen and I have never met someone more deserving than Elizabeth. She is a truly an amazing person. Congrats Elizabeth!

Last Saturday 20th July, I organised the Nenagh N52 Walking Routes Map Launch and 6km Club Colours Walking Challenge on the N52 to raise funds for Relay for Life Tipperary.  I was delighted to be in a position as Minister to put in approximately €1.3 million in funding to walkways and cycleways across Nenagh and the N52 bypass, and it is great to see people use the facilities on a daily basis. I am very proud of the brochure which is excellently presented with lots of very informative,
