The European Parliament votes tomorrow on the allocation of funds for Waterford Crystal workers and I am calling on the Government to publish a detailed plan on how they will use the funding.

It is no secret that serious mistakes have been made by the government in dealing with the European Globalisation Funding for the former Dell Workers.

This week I had a visit from a group of Law students from across Irish Universities, but in particular UCC and what a lively bunch they were in Strasbourg! The certanly knew how to make the most out of the trip and enjoy themselves while also learning and asking many, many questions. I was delighted to have them there. In particular, it was great to have Declan Walsh, Lecturer in EU Law in UCC accompanying them. Declan has been a friend of mine for many years since my time in Cork and is a great authority on all matters in relation to Europe.

With the economy in the state it is thanks to failed Government policies and their mishandling of the public finances allayed with a world economic downturn, I believe it is time that we went back to basics from a business perspective. We need to adopt first principles again and become competitive. Thts why we need to trust our own instincts, trust our own people and their new ideas for enterprises, develop our education system and provide the infrastructure to allow our economy to be competitive.

Morale of Public Service is a Major Worry

Campaigning in Bantry
Campaigning in Bantry

Running across the country trying to meet as many people and shake as many hands as possible at the moment. Many of the conversations involved light-hearted banter, but when you get into the serious nitty-gritty with people, you come across some disturbing trends.

Right now, public service morale is at a disturbingly low level. Whether it is teachers, nurses, administrators, engineers, every public servant you meet has plenty of valid reasons to angry. The worry is if will this start affecting performance, as it is bound to and will the vulnerable people who need the public service the most, suffer the most?

Visiting Cork Institute of Technology

Was in CIT today where all the European candidates were invited by the Political Society to come and visit the students. It was an interesting day, listening to the the students, who have real concerns about their future(s). There is a serious issue with job placement in many courses and the level of this was startling.

I was delighted to be brought around CIT by their Sigerson Cup winning captain, Paul O'Flynn, a sound man. I also got to spend a good bit of time with Gearoid Buckley, who is the student president in CIT. My party colleague and lecturer in the college, Brendan Ryan also lent his support.

We had a good turnout with the usual support from all the lads in Cork, Keith, Mark etc.

Campaigning in Waterford's Red Square

I spent last Saturday in Waterford on the campaign trail. I was joined by my colleagues Brian O'Shea T.D, Mayor Jack Walsh and Cllr. Seamus Ryan. We campaigned throughout Waterford again and and got a great reception.

The Cllrs in Waterford are excellent and very popular as is Brian O'Shea, who has been a fantastic servant to the people of Waterford. I have the height of admiration for him.

Eamon Gilmore Visits Nenagh

Our party leader Eamon Gilmore visited Nenagh on Friday (27th), where he was welcomed by a large selection of the party membership. He was particularly pleased to see his old trade union colleagues Frank and Ger Lewis, with who he worked for many years. It was great for the membership to meet with Eamon again and he certainly has shown his support to the constituency by the frequency of his visits.

While in Nenagh, we did a walkabout and got a great reception. He was an instant hit with the public as usual. Eamon was briefed on the issues facing the town, particularly unemployment, the future of the hospital and cutbacks in education.

I was delighted to be chosen as the Honorary Life Vice President of the UCC Politics Society. The ceremony which took place on Monday Feb 2nd was a great occasion and I'd like to thank the society for choosing someone who has great affection for his former Alma Mater. It was a bit of a surreal occasion for me in Boole 2, having sat there previously on many occasions, listening to Joe Lee, Dermot Keogh and Donncha O'Corrain.

Education cuts reflect this government's lack of Vision

Over the last few weeks, I have spoken to teachers, members of boards of management and parents and they cannot understand why this government are picking on children. Fianna Fail promised to cut class numbers to 20/1 in 2002 and to 24/1 in 2007 in their election manifestos and here they are increasing them to 28/1. We have the highest class sizes in the EU and this Government have shown that they are willing to make children and their teachers suffer for their complete mismanagement of the economy. Despite their promises, they are targeting the most vulnerable.
