Paddy Downey Convention Cashel

Paddy Downey Convention
Paddy Downey Convention

Tonight I attended the Labour party's Cashel convention that selected Cllr. Paddy Downey as our candidate. Paddy is a fine candidate and a great local community activist across a broad range of activities.

The convention, which had approximately 100 people in attendance was chaired by my colleague Sean Sherlock TD. Senator Phil Prendergast, Cllr Darren Ryan and Cllr Maureen O'Donoghue also spoke at the convention. Many people spoke of their admiration for Maureen as she is standing down from Cashel Town Council after many years of service for the Labour party.

Its very important that we win back our seat in this area and I'm 100% behind Paddy and I look forward canvassing with him over the coming months.

Coming Back Home

Back Home in Portroe
Back Home in Portroe

I got back to my home village of Portroe early on the 9th to be met by a huge crowd of supporters and well wishers. I have to say it was one of the most special nights of my life. Before that I was met by a large convey of cars at the county bounds near Limerick to welcome me home. We proceeded in a convey through Nenagh and out then to Portroe. The village of newly elected Cllr. Jonathan Meaney, County hurling manager Liam Sheedy (and goalie Darren Gleeson), the brillant musician Gerry O'Connor and of course Aoife Kelly, our Rose of Tralee. It is a small parish but one of the most united in the country and I'm exceptionally proud to come from there.

On the Campaign Trail with Seanie Lonergan
On the Campaign Trail with Seanie Lonergan

Yesterday I was campaigning in South Tipperary with Seanie Lonergan, who is our local Councillor in Cahir. Seanie is an excellent worker and effectively knows everyone in the area. I have evey confidence that he will get re-elected.

The response in the area was brillant. I know quite a few people around there and made many friends in college from that area. Many people knew me also from listening to me on Tipp FM and also Tipp Mid West radio.

TIPPERARY NORTH LABOUR PARTY SELECTION CONVENTION

With my Proposer and Seconder

Friday, December 17th will always be a proud datte for me as I fulfilled a dream of becoming the Labour party's Dail General Election candidate. A large crowd attended the Convention in The Rag, Thurles despite the terrible weather conditions. It was a very special night for myself and my family who have been involved in the Labour party for many years. I was especially pleased to see so many new faces at the event who want a change and I'm delighted that they see me as the avenue to that change in North Tipperary. I was nominated to run by Ger Lewis from Nenagh. Ger is one of the most popular Labour members I have ever met. Last year he along with his brother Frank were gold medal winners for their contribution to the Labour party. My Party Leader Eamon Gilmore is a good friend of his. His electoral knowledge is fantastic and he has been a great friend of mine for many years. Michael Shanhan is a good old friend of mine from Roscrea, whose father Tommy Shanahan was a long time Councillor for the party in that area. I was delighted to have the calibe of these two great individuals to propose and second me.

Portroe Gang at New York Tipp Dinner

I was in New York last week doing some work that I had planned for some time. While there I was delighted to take up an invitation to attend the Tipperary GAA Dinner Dance. It was a fantastic occasion especially as the Liam McCarthy was present under the stewardship of Tipp Manager Liam Sheedy and Captain Eoin Kelly. Also present were selector Mick Ryan and Tipp U 21 Captain Padraic Maher. We also had a Kerry man in our midst in the statur of John Evans, Tipp Football Manager and a real character.

TIPP WIN A CREDIT TO THE TEAM AND MANAGEMENT

With Liam Sheedy at Homecoming of Tipperary hurling Team in Portroe after All Ireland win

To say I'm a happy Tipperary man after our All Ireland hurling final win would be an understatement in the extreme. I'm absolutely thrilled, for the players, for the management, for Liam Sheedy and all the backroom staff. It was an unbelievable performance where there was no dispute as to who were the better team.

I was quietly confident going into the game that we would do it and despite Kilkenny clawing back to just within a point at half time, I still believed we'd do it. The performance of all the players was at 100% and when Tipp are in that form, with such a young team as well, they are unstoppable. They were so determined to wipe out the memories of last year.

BEST OF LUCK TO LIAM AND TIPP LADS

Best of luck to Liam and all the lads in the final on Sunday. I know we can do it. I can sense a level of determination this year that will bring us home. Kilkenny are a fine team but I think most neutrals will be urging us on. Heading up on Sunday morning and will be staying for the banquet, win, lose or draw. I know they'll win though! C'Mon the Premier

IRELAND MUST FOLLOW FINLAND AND MAKE DIGITAL HISTORY

Posted on July 02, 2010 by Alan Kelly

Following the news that Finland has made broadband access a legal right for every citizen, I believe Ireland must follow their example and make broadband available to every Irish home and business.

Finland made digital history when it became the first country in the world to make broadband a legal right for every citizen.

From 1 July every Finn will have the right to access to a 1Mbps (megabit per second) broadband connection.

What we need now is an urgent review of Ireland’s broadband strategy. Ireland lags way behind the rest of Europe when it comes to broadband and the problem is worst in rural areas.

EU COMMITTEE REPORTS ON GOVT'S HANDLING OF EU DELL MONEY

The report submitted by the select group of MEP's who visited Limerick to examine the handling of the Dell EGF funds have confirmed all the issues I have highlighting.

The Government’s handling of the EU retraining money for former Dell workers has now proven beyond doubt to be shambolic.
