The Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore TD announcing that Alan Kelly MEP is to seek the Tipp North nomination.

I have formally announced I will be putting himself forward to the local Labour organisation as a candidate for the forthcoming general election. I've made the announcement following a serious of phone calls and meetings with Labour Party Leader Eamon Gilmore last week.

I am honoured to accept Eamon Gilmore’s invitation to put myself forward as a candidate for Labour in North Tipperary. This will be the most important election in North Tipperary and Ireland for a generation and I am delighted that Eamon has requested that I be part of his team for it.

Opening of Roscrea Office
Opening of Roscrea Office

I was delighted to recently open my new office in Roscrea. The official opening was performed by my party leader Eamon Gilmore T.D. I was delighted to see such a huge crowd turn out for the event. In particular I want to mention Tommy Murphy who ran for us in Roscreea in the last election and who recently lost his wife, Joan and Michael Shanahan, whose father the late Tommy Shanahan was a Labour Coucillor for the area for many years.

Becoming an MEP
Becoming an MEP

A big thank you to the people of Ireland South for choosing me to represent you in the European Parliament. It is a great honour and a privilege. It was a very enjoyable campaign and one that I will always cherish. I want to thank the thousands of people voted for me. I will do my best at all times to ensure they get the best representation at EU level, whether they are workers, fishermen or farmers. I also believe we can learn an awful lot more from Europe in a progressive way and I intend to demonstrate that.

Labour's Red and Blue
Labour's Red and Blue

Thankfully I held back on booking the trip to Edinburgh. Going on form, Munster should have won this game easily but this was essentially a derby match and as the cliché goes, at a derby, form goes out the window.

The atmosphere at Croke Park was terrific though and credit to both sets of fans. I used the occasion of the match to pick the political brain of Proinsias De Rossa. As we walked about saying hello to friends and fans, I absorbed as much as I could from Labour’s only Irish MEP, a man of equal integrity and ability.

A Great Cork Team
A Great Cork Team

Today and yesterday Eamon Gilmore was with us in Cork. We had a social evening in the Rochestown Park hotel on Thursday and there was a huge crowd present to here Eamon and myself speak. It was a great opportunity to rally the troops again for the final 5 weeks. it also gave me time to meet up with some of the new candidates that have come to the field in the last few weeks. I was really pleased to see so many new, young faces amongst them.

2009 Labour Budget Proposals Launch
2009 Labour Budget Proposals Launch

Today I was part of the Labour team that launched our 2009 Budget proposals ahead of the emergency budget next Tuesday (7th). I was particularly glad to get some of my suggestions into the proposal, especially in relation ot the areas of re-prioritising Broadband in the NDP and securing more job placements for college graduates. In order to get this economy turned around we need to invest in new ideas and young people and these are two areas in which I think we can do just that.

The following are the key points from our proposals:

With PES Leader Martin Schulz MEP at National Conf

Our National Conference was held over the weekend in Mullingar or 'Penrose' country as we like to call it after our local TD there. It was an excellent conference and I was highly impressed by the volume of new and young people I met at it. It was also a confernece that showed that my party is the party of values. Values that have stood the test of time and are more relevant now than ever before.

It was also a conference of ideas. So many motions were excellently researched and showed that there is a bright future out there if we could just as a country invest in our own creativity and capacity.

With Martin Coughlan

I spent much of yesterday with Cll Martin Coughlan in Ballincollig. Martin is a tru Labour man. He has huge integrity and is a really sound fella.

this was the first time I had canvassed in Ballincollig and again I have to say the reception was great. People liked the fact that I was a young candidate. They liked what I had to say about investment and jobs. They really appreciated what I was saying about education and broadband.
