EU COMMITTEE REPORTS ON GOVT'S HANDLING OF EU DELL MONEY
Posted on June 25, 2010 by Alan Kelly
The report submitted by the select group of MEP's who visited Limerick to examine the handling of the Dell EGF funds have confirmed all the issues I have highlighting.
The Government’s handling of the EU retraining money for former Dell workers has now proven beyond doubt to be shambolic.

Following a series of meetings in Limerick on Friday June 4th, I am calling on the European Parliament's employment committee to appoint someone to liaise with the government over the handling of the EGF fund.

Time to Investigate M7 Workers Employment Conditions
Posted on February 03, 2010 by Alan Kelly
I am calling for a full investigation into the working conditions of workers on the new M7. This arises following receipt of a number of complaints from former skilled workers who were paid the hourly rate of a general operative in breach of The Wages Act 1991. This in particular relates to hundreds of workers who have been let go off the site in the last six months.
The complaints come from former employees of Coffey Construction and relate not only to rates of pay but to a number of issues which include payment of a flat rate for overtime hours worked and incomplete contracts of employment. These are in breach of Labour laws and practices.

Fighting For EU Support for Dell Workers
Posted on October 20, 2009 by Alan Kelly
For eight months now I have been working with the DELL Workers Group on trying to secure them a better deal following the withdrawal of the DELL company from much of its plant in Limerick. This has had a huge impact on the economic well being of the Mid West as a result of the thousands of job losses amongst families in Limerick, Tipperary, Clare, Kerry and Cork.

Election Heating Up Now
Posted on May 04, 2009 by Alan Kelly
Another day, another two counties knocked out on the canvassing trail. The Fair in Kilmallock was busy today as was I and James Heffernan – a fantastic local election candidate. Every Labour candidate across the country now is full of energy, buoyed on by the amazing response on the doorstep and the natural momentum we have gained over the past year. The Labour team is hungry for success and James will deliver I have no doubt. He comes from a strong hurling family and he possesses the same hunger for success that has made the Heffernan name famous.

Rugby Rip Off: Disgraceful
Posted on April 28, 2009 by Alan Kelly
Just to get something off my chest. It is incredibly unfair to see the extent to which rugby fans are being ripped off by airline companies ahead of the Heineken Cup final in Edinburgh.
One of Munster and Leinster (The Southern Province hopefully) will be playing yet it will cost you €560 odd euro to fly from Dublin to Edinburgh return over Saturday on Sunday whereas on the Monday when there is no game on, it costs a mere €30.

Canvassing in West Limerick/Listowel
Posted on April 09, 2009 by Alan Kelly
Today I was canvassing in West Limerick and I visited Adare, Rathkeale, Newcastlewest, Abbeyfeale and Listowel. It was a hectic but productive day. Today re-iterated to me again the quality of candidates that we have standing in the local elections for the Labour party across Munster.

Nenagh A&E The End
Posted on April 06, 2009 by Alan Kelly
Today begun with the first debate of the European campaign. The debate took place in Limerick 95s studio and was attended by four of the candidates including myself. It was an eventful day after that and this evening was quite a sad one for me as the doors of Nenagh Hospital closed at 8pm. From now on the HSE intend to transfer all self admitted A&E patients to Limerick Regional.

Gaelic Players Association Campaign
Posted on April 01, 2009 by Alan Kelly
Today I was at the launch of the GPAs campaign to maintain the grants that inter county players get as a contribution to the expenses they incur during the year. I was the first member of the Oireachtas to actually join the GPA and as far as I know I remain the only national politician who is a member of the organisation. I am a huge fan of GAA players and the commitment they give to their games. They offer a huge enhancement to cultural life in Ireland and they are great role models as well.
