TIPPERARY NORTH LABOUR PARTY SELECTION CONVENTION
Posted on December 20, 2010 by Alan Kelly
Friday, December 17th will always be a proud datte for me as I fulfilled a dream of becoming the Labour party's Dail General Election candidate. A large crowd attended the Convention in The Rag, Thurles despite the terrible weather conditions. It was a very special night for myself and my family who have been involved in the Labour party for many years. I was especially pleased to see so many new faces at the event who want a change and I'm delighted that they see me as the avenue to that change in North Tipperary. I was nominated to run by Ger Lewis from Nenagh. Ger is one of the most popular Labour members I have ever met. Last year he along with his brother Frank were gold medal winners for their contribution to the Labour party. My Party Leader Eamon Gilmore is a good friend of his. His electoral knowledge is fantastic and he has been a great friend of mine for many years. Michael Shanhan is a good old friend of mine from Roscrea, whose father Tommy Shanahan was a long time Councillor for the party in that area. I was delighted to have the calibe of these two great individuals to propose and second me.

IRELAND MUST FOLLOW FINLAND AND MAKE DIGITAL HISTORY
Posted on July 02, 2010 by Alan Kelly
Following the news that Finland has made broadband access a legal right for every citizen, I believe Ireland must follow their example and make broadband available to every Irish home and business.
Finland made digital history when it became the first country in the world to make broadband a legal right for every citizen.
From 1 July every Finn will have the right to access to a 1Mbps (megabit per second) broadband connection.
What we need now is an urgent review of Ireland’s broadband strategy. Ireland lags way behind the rest of Europe when it comes to broadband and the problem is worst in rural areas.

ACT NOW OR PUT YOUNG FARMERS AT RISK
Posted on April 19, 2010 by Alan Kelly
I took the opportunity during the Labour Party National Conference at NUI Galway, to highlight the grave situation facing farmers if the future of the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) is not addressed now.
The clock is counting down towards 2013, and with every minute that passes, the situation for Irish farmers becomes more critical.
Agriculture is at the very core of rural life in Ireland and CAP 2013 is critical to ensuring future generations of farmers do not turn their backs on the industry.
We must encourage young farmers to get involved and provide them with a viable career path in farming.

€87k BILL FOR TIPPERARY CARER 'TOTALLY RIDICULOUS'
Posted on April 13, 2010 by Alan Kelly
I am appalled at the Governments treatment of a Tipperary carer following demands she repay almost €87,000.
The woman who has been in receipt of carer’s allowance for looking after her husband is now being asked to repay the money which the Dept of Social and Family Affairs are claiming she was overpaid.
Kelly said “It is quite simply beyond belief the way this lady is being treated. She was providing an invaluable service to the Tipperary community and she is being hit on all sides by a Government that clearly has no idea what is it doing.
Just last week we had billions being poured into the banks and here we have a horrible example of the blatant hypocrisy that exists in Ireland.

Nenagh Hospital A&E Vigil
Posted on March 30, 2009 by Alan Kelly
Tonight members of the Nenagh Hospital Action Group (NHAG) began a Vigil for one hour outside Nenagh Hospital. This Vigil will take place every night from 7-8pm to protest at the imminent closure of the 24 hour A&E. As of now, we are of the understanding that the A&E will close next Monday, April 6th. That would simply be disgraceful.
Here we have a large, widely dispersed, geographical area in North Tipperary that will be left without a local A&E from 8pm to 8am. Yet there is no strategy for how the ambulance services are going to be run how this will work with local doctors, how Limerick Regional Hospital is going to seal with the extra patients etc.

Jonathan Meaney's Campaign Launch
Posted on March 21, 2009 by Alan Kelly
Last night I was back in North Tipperary to help launch Jonathan Meaney's campaign in the Newport electoral area. It was a great night and Jonathan made one of the best speeches from a young candidate that I have ever heard.
He spoke with passion about being from the area, about how he wanted to continue the good work of our local retiring Cllr. Sean Creamer and how he would never let the people down. Speaking as a young father, he stated that one of his main campaigns would be local amenities for local areas - this is something he is very strong on and has spoken about at length before.

Mid West Labour Conference
Posted on February 27, 2009 by Alan Kelly
On Thursday (Feb 26th), we held a get together of Labour party members, supporters and other organisations and voluntary groups in the Mid West in the Marriott hotel in Limerick. A very large crowd attended to here myself and Jon O'Sullivan speak either side of our party leader, Eamon Gilmore.
There was a wide range of people at the meeting to here Eamon give a fantastic speech, which espoused the need for strong leadership in order to turn this country around. He also spoke of the need for the Government to take on many of Labour's economic policies (as they have been doing) in order to stimulate growth and help save jobs.

On the Canvass Trail in Limerick
Posted on February 14, 2009 by Alan Kelly
I was canvassing in Limerick city with many of my colleagues recently. The response was excellent and I was very encouraged by it. Its very easy to canvass with my friend and colleague Jan O'Sullivan, as she is very popular with the locals in Limerick. I was also out with Joe Kemmy, Jim's brother, which is always a pleasure. I was always a huge admirer of Jim Kemmy. He was a man of huge integrity and kept his values and beliefs throughout his political life.
