Kelly Urges People to Saorview Digital TV

Issued : Monday 1 October, 2012

Local TD Alan Kelly, Minister for Public Transport is urging people to switch to Saorview, Ireland’s free digital television service.

Minister Kelly said that “I am very concerned about people in the constituency who may not be aware of the need to switch to Saorview.  Saorview will replace the current free analogue TV signal which you receive through your aerial, it will be switched off on October 24 2012, and people will be left with a blank screen.

All those still using the old analogue TV network will have noticed a ‘bug’ on the bottom of their TV screen which will be a permanent reminder and countdown to analogue switchover. This ‘bug’ will remain on all analogue TV screens until October 24 or until those TV sets have been switched to the digital network. Research shows that one in four people don’t believe that the analogue shut down will happen, I can assure you that it will happen at 10am on October 24 2012.

Once you change to Saorview you will immediately see the benefits of digital TV, clearer picture, better quality sound, A 7-day on-screen TV guide, ten RTÉ Radio services and RTÉ Aertel Digital is an enhanced version of RTÉ Aertel Teletext service.    In order to get Saorview TV, you need a Saorview approved set top box or a Saorview approved TV.  It’s also important that people know that if they are Sky or UPC Customers they don’t need to change to Saorview.

I would also ask that if you have any elderly neighbours, that may not be aware of Saorview, please give them practical help.  Ensure that they purchase the necessary items from a registered retailer and help them set up Saorview, so they are not left without a TV service, which lots of elderly people rely on".
